I'm looking to add an overdrive pedal to help me improve the overdrive tone on my VHT Special 6 Ultra. The amp does blackface sounding cleans really well, but I'm not a fan of the overdriven sound.

With the versatility of these two pedals, I can get the sound I want from either. For those of you that have actually used both pedals, which do you prefer and why?

Hi there!
I have both pedals. I alternate between them regularly. But they are my go-to dirt pedals.

The Green Pony is definitely more versatile and gets much dirtier.

The Silver Pony 2, I've mod'ed so the boost comes before the OD and changed out a cap to get fuller bass response.

I love them both. But I only use them for crunchy tones and to push an already dirty amp so ymmv.

Both are really fun builds.

Based purely on overdrive tone, I prefer the Green Overdrive. It gives you a wider range of tones with the extra toggle switch.

The SP2 is a great pedal, though, and it adds that boost channel. So you can get two separate gain stages (sorta), or you can have a solo boost. It's a great sounding drive too, but the extra versatility is really the reason for getting it. Unless you have no use for a boost channel, of course.

Then of course there's the matter of pedalboard real estate.

If I were building a board where I had everything but the overdrive sorted, it would be the Green Pony. If I were wanting to keep things small and maximize space and power drops while still needing OD and boost, it would be the Silver Pony.

Hope that makes things even muddier for you!

Sounds like the GP is the way to go. Thanks!
