I've noticed this ever since I built this several years ago: the jaws that clamp the power tubes don't open up enough to clamp the base of the tubes. Any ideas on how to fix this?

EDIT: opened it up to take a pic and the right power tube popped out with a very light touch. You can see pins in the picture.

I also notice the base of the tube is a bit bigger.

Also, is it safe to switch to a 6L6 or 5881 in this amp?

Some tube bases just don't fit in the clamp style tube retainer. You can swap out for the kind with springs that goes over the top of the tube. They will fit almost anything. KT66, 5881, 6L6 and EL34 are all interchangeable.
