Didn't really have a choice. I love the Squier Classic Vibe series of guitars. I love Telecasters. And before there was the Telecaster (or, more correctly, the Broadcaster) there was the Esquire--the first solid body guitar sold by Fender. This year marks its 70th anniversary, and Fender has issued two commemorative versions. The US-made one with the Fender name on it goes for TWO GRAND. Pass....

But Squier is offering one, too, a Classic Vibe Esquire in vintage white for a very reasonable four Benjamins. They've been back-ordered for a few months but they're in stock now. Snagged one and it arrived yesterday. So far, I'm very impressed. The fit and finish is AMAZING, especially at this price point, and it plays like a champ. Sweetwater does a great job on the setup/inspection. The tuners and controls feel very solid, not cheap at all. And the pickup has clarity & twang galore. Incredible these days how much quality they can offer at such an affordable price!

Looks great, Bob! The CV line keeps getting more interesting. Love that color, too.

Not yet....but I'm thinking about it! I love the Gotoh compensated brass saddles--have 'em on three of my Teles now--so will probably add a set of those. And I may reverse the control plate, since I really like it on THIS TELE. But that will require some rewiring of the pots and switch, since a couple of the switch wires won't reach when the two pot positions are swapped.

I have those saddles on a few of mine as well, they are fantastic. I think I’ve turned the control plat on all of mine if not most. I modded one to be an esquire with the eldred mod, one to bypass the tone and I guess one to not, I don’t remember exactly.

Don't swap out the bridge/saddles just yet.

That Eldred Esquire wiring mod looks interesting! The stock front pickup switch position (big-time treble rolloff) doesn't sound like anything I'm likely to use, so as long as I'm re-wiring the switch to reverse the control plate, I think I'll try that mod, too. Thanks for the tip, Jimi!

You don’t have to use it, you just have to be able to use it. I don’t have 40 guitars because I use them. [FACE WITH TEARS OF JOY]

Very cool Esquire, Bob!

I think I’ve tried that mod Jimi was talking about - it does add some versatility to the single pickup. Another thought (if it’s routed under the pickguard) is the new Seymour Duncan stealth Esq pickup that sits under the guard.

I am also curious about this! (I can only assume it's a soon-to-be-released BYOC Telecaster saddle conversion kit.)

An interesting theory! Guess we'll just have to be patient for now....

Done! See photo below--Volume on top, Tone in the middle, switch on the bottom. Also wired in the Eldred mod for a more usable tone (at least for me) in the front switch position. The article I linked above describes it as "a scooped and hollow midrange that sounds nice and warm", and that seems pretty accurate to me. I used a 3.9nf cap for mine.

I'm surprised it's not routed since a) esquires were always routed for a neck pickup and b) it would let them use the same cnc program they currently use for the teles and thus save them some work.

Whatever their reasoning it's still a nice looking guitar you have there.

Perhaps a BYOC Gizmatron?!

Diggin the color as it is unique.

So Bob, I recall your old rule of one in one out. Did you ditch one? ( your wife doesn’t read this right? )

Back during the summer, I sold two guitars that I never played (a Godin electric and my old Yamaha FG300 acoustic; never bonded with the former and didn't play the latter after I bought my Martin HD28) and my Mesa Boogie Mark Five:25 (formerly used at church, but I'm now going directly into the PA). Needed $$ to buy THIS GUITAR, which was love at first sight. Then I saw this Esquire offered for pre-order at Sweetwater, said to myself, "Whoa, cool!!" and reserved one of them. But I still have a bit of the "war chest" left and a hole where the Mesa used to sit, so you can draw your own conclusions about that....

FINISHED!

In addition to the previously covered wiring mod and control plate inversion, I made two more changes to my new CV Esquire:

  • Replaced the stock pickup (I have that bright Tele bridge tone well covered by multiple other guitars) with a Suprocaster from Gemini Pickups. Check it out (along with several excellent video clips) here: https://www.geminipickups.com/suprocaster.html#/ Still has plenty of Tele sparkle & spank, but with a more mid-forward tone. Kinda half-way between a Tele bridge pickup and a P90...
  • ...and installed it in a snazzy bridge & compensated saddle assembly from Mastery, a great gift from a good friend. The design is really ingenious, letting you pivot the angle of the two 3-string saddles to give optimal intonation. The saddles themselves are chromed brass.

Man, that’s looking sharp. What do you think about an ashtray cover for the bridge to give it that retro look?

I like the look, but it pretty much kills palm muting at the bridge....
