Hi All,

Doing a variety of stuff lately.....

Installed EMG PJ bass pickups in a friend's Epiphone Bass. (I used all the EMG 25K pots etc.) All works well except the pot controlling the J pickup will not turn completely off. It turns down, but not off. I'm going to pull the pot out and see if it's bad, but I think that is a longshot. Anyone run into this. I haven't had problems with the active EMG stuff before. Checked the wiring etc. The whole control cavity is covered with the shielding paint and I thought that might be a problem with the switching jack, but I have the same issue with the jack outside the guitar. Anyone run into this?

Thanks!!!

I have ZERO experience with EMG active pickup systems, so take my suggestions with a big grain of salt!

Are these the solderless EMG pots you're using? How difficult would it be for you to switch the two volume pots and see if the problem moves with the pot or stays with the rest of the J pickup installation?

Do you have the right wires on the right lugs on the jack? It sounds like the pot or it isn’t grounded properly.

Thanks Guys!

I can switch the pots pretty easily so I can give it a try and I'll also measure the pots turned up and off to make sure the pots are working the same. The active EMG pickups don't need grounding like non-active pickups. The thing that concerns me about the grounding is the entire cavity of the bass is painted with shielding paint so even when I have eliminated the bridge ground, the pots and sleeve of the jack are still connected via the shielding paint. I was thinking of scraping off all the paint around the pots and jack, but there should be a way to test. I removed the components and still had the same volume issue. Let me check the pots and switch them around and see if I can narrow this down.

Thank you!

Hi All,

Bad 25K pot. Swapped the pots around and the other pickup had the same volume problem. Thanks for the help duhvoodooman and jimilee! EMG has better support than almost any company I can think of. Called and told them what was wrong and the pot is on the way N/C. :D

Thanks,
Andy

That's been my experience as well.

Had a preamp board that showed up with a cap that had fallen off. Shipped me a replacement with no questions asked... to Afghanistan.
