… who sold their OG TS-808. Now, after the seller’s remorse, I’m replacing the lost one. Kept it un-modded except for the 3rd clipping diode addition to make the distortion asymmetrical (or the clipping asymmetrical-not sure of the proper way to say it)

Anyhoo-if anyone is familiar with this pedal AND the original TS, is the addition of a diode going to absolutely ruin the effect?

When I was testing it, I really liked the sound. Proper rock and roll out of a Princeton Reverb Reissue. If they don’t like it, I’ll be happy to take it back. Still, they have electronics expertise so I’ll just tell them to cut out the third diode and add a jumper. I think that can be done without removing the pcb.

After a few failures building, it was great to hit a home run. Artwork by Roger Haus without permission.

Looks great--nice, clean build!

No, the extra diode won't "ruin the effect." The difference in the clipping character is quite subtle--I'm sure your friend will enjoy the pedal as is. And he can always remove that diode and jumper the space if he wants to.

BTW, it would be easy to have both symmetrical and asymmetrical clipping options in the pedal by installing a DPDT mini-toggle across that diode space. Just solder the diode (with the correct orientation, of course) across one end pair of lugs on the switch, and a jumper across the other end pair. The middle lugs are then soldered to the eyelets of that 3rd diode space on the PCB. The toggle switch can be mounted up through the top of the enclosure, assuming you can find a location with enough clearance to avoid touching the PCB, or out through one of the enclosure sides, which is how I generally do it ('cuz it's easier!).

I was checking out some of Roger Haus' artwork online. That boy ain't right....

Thank you for the switch idea. I really do need to send this off but should I build another clipper of some kind, I will bear that in mind. And ya, re artwork, that is why I like him. He strange!

Yeah, I've used that same DPDT switch mod in a number of different pedals. The photo below shows a slightly different application I used on my BYOC Blue Overdrive. This mod allows switching between two different capacitor values to allow more or less lower frequencies through the pedal, a.k.a. the "fat mod" as shown on page 7 of the Blue Overdrive Mod Pack instructions. The graphic of the mod shown there uses an SPDT toggle, but I prefer to use a DPDT so that the caps aren't "hanging off" the switch.

Thanks for the info

I do have one of those blue overdrives in the queue. If I can get the shredder up and running then I’ll think about that Fat mod (with the bigger switch to keep the caps tidy).
