I've had a couple friend-builds come back to me with loose I/O jacks and footswitches, and in one case a broken wire that happened when the guy tried to retighten the jack and caused it to spin too far away from its original orientation.

How do you guys ensure that the nuts stay tight on jacks and switches—or for that matter, pots, since I just had to retighten the pots on my first build?

You could use some locktite. Another idea would be to start using the non-spin tabs on the pot. doesn't help with the looseness, but it'll save the wires should someone tighten it from the outside. I use envirotex on mostly all of my builds, I find it has a sort of spring quality that keeps pressure on the nut. I think locktite will probably be the best solution here. I would use blue.

use loctite (spin beat me to it by seconds) or just a drop of the cheapest super glue for the dollar store at the base of the jack then screw down the nut as you secure the jack from rolling by hand. or just a bit of simple elemer's glue for adhesion and tightening effect.
or the anti bust-a-nut

I havent had a problem with the locking washers. just tighten the jack until it wont spin anymore, and you should be good.

lock washers are the industry standard (real industry, not just pedals) :)

the trouble is, the correct use of them is between the nut and the flat washer. that doesn't look so nice however.

I do a combo of star washer inside and locktite blue outside. no way those things are coming loose, ever.

The lock washer should be inside the pedal not outside.

The lock washer goes between the jack casing and the inside of the enclosure.

yep, that's where I put mine. I'm just saying that for a lock washer to work as designed, it's supposed to go next to the nut. putting it on the bolt side severely limits its usefulness. not a big deal at all for pedal builders, but in other applications...

I use lock washers too.
