I am currently building my second BYOC, the Yellow Overdrive. I wanted to make it the inverse of the Boss original - Black with yellow lettering. Below is an image of what I was going for.

After I painted the enclosure black, bought the clear waterslide paper, and made the lettering in GIMP using yellow, I read that light colors won't work well on dark backgrounds using clear paper. Well, I tried it anyway, and just like people said, you could barely see the yellow lettering printed on the decal. Does anyone have any tips to make this yellow on black idea work? Maybe print it 2 or 3 times and layer the decal?

Maybe I should just repaint and do black lettering on a yellow enclosure like the original Boss.

I think you'd probably need to use white decal paper rather than clean, and then print both the black and the yellow, but then the blacks won't match. There's not a great way to do this that I'm aware of.

^ This. Clear waterslides are great for dark graphics on a lighter background, but not visa-versa. The problem is that the light color inks are nearly transparent and you'd need something that was distinctly opaque.

I'll try a white sheet with the black background. Maybe the blacks won't be that different.

Well if all else fails, get an exacto knife and cut out the letters, tedious for sure.

I tried the white decal paper. The blacks are not exact but pretty close. The only thing was the printing rubbed off a bit here and there where I cut the decal (I cut real close to the text). I took a bit of the black spray paint and used a tiny brush to dab the white on the edges of the decal where there was some exposed white. Looks good! Hopefully be posting the final product in the Show Your Completed Build section soon!

Thanks

It's been over 15 years since I've used decal stock, and my printer at the time was already long in the tooth, but I never had much luck with the white decal stock. I could never get it to look good. It always looked like I just printed it out on regular paper.

You could paint the top of the pedal yellow and the sides black. Then print black on clear decal stock in "negative" to make one big decal that covers the entire top.

That’s a great idea, Keith. Full face decals are always better IMO anyway, because you don’t have to work very hard to conceal the edges.

FWIW, I’ve had good luck with printing color on white decal stock using a modern inkjet printer.

I have a cheap Samsung laser printer, works great, plus you don’t have to clear coat first.
