Red Plating?

I'm trying at attach a picture.
I built this amp last year and it sounds great. But I'm worried that I have a red plating tube.
Looking for advice.

Were the two power tubes a matched pair? Are they fixed biased or cathode biased?

Could you possibly attach a photo taken in a dark room? No way to tell if you're getting red plating from those photos. Looks more like drastically different cathode heaters in the tubes.

Look like a problem to me. Looks like maybe one tube isn’t even lighting up. I’d do two things:

- open up the chassis and inspect all of the components and solder joints associated with both power tubes. Look for loose connections and burnt components.
- swap the power tubes. Does the problem follow the tube? If so, pop in a fresh matched pair. You should always have a backup pair of power tubes on hand because power tubes wear out, short out, and need replacement more often than any other tubes in an amp.

Now it looks okay to me.
Does it matter which speaker input I use?

Yeah, visually that looks good. Compared to your first photo, which appeared like the cathode heaters of the left power tube weren't working, it makes me wonder if you have a wonky heater wire connection somewhere around that tube socket.

I'm using the JJ tubes that came with the BYOC kit. I wired it according the to instructions and haven't done anything to bias it.

OK, thanks--it's the 18W TMB kit, so it's cathode biased as built.
