Hi! Just finished my first ever BYOC build and it was a great experience!

My Classic Fuzz powers on fine, LED is good, I get a lovely fuzz tone. My issues are:

When I engage the effect I have a very loud 'pop!' sound. I'm familiar with true bypass pedals having this when engaged in some circumstances, however this seems to be much louder!

The fat/full/thin switch doesn't seem to be doing anything when the effect is engaged, no change in tonal characteristics at all when I flick the switch between different modes.

I'll attach photos with multiple angles of the PCB etc. If anything else is required please give me a shout.

Many thanks for your help! :D

Al

I don't see any misplaced components. I'd suggest touching up your soldering. It's pretty clean overall, but you should use a bit more solder. You want the solder to flow through to the component side and fill the whole eyelet. I see several joints that don't do that. Go through and melt each joint and add a touch more solder.

Pay attention to the joints where the toggle switch is, too. Those joints need to be nice and clean, with no solder bridging across from one pin to the next. I recommend doing one pin, then waiting a minute before doing the next one. Those switches can melt if too much heat is applied without letting it cool.

Do you have a multimeter and know how to use it?

Understood, I'll go over the solder. Thank you!

Yep, I've got a meter and can use it.

OK, I've got the fat/full/thin switch working! However, when I move across the different modes I get a very loud pop, and I still get the loud pop when I engage the effect as well.

Edit: for clarification this is occurring when powered by either a 9v battery or isolated power from my voodoo labs pp2.

A pop when you flip the toggle switch is to be expected. I don't know about your foot switch pop. How loud is loud? You have to expect a certain amount of pop with true mechanical bypass as well. There's just no getting around it. However, certain grounding conditions can exacerbate it.

Hi, thanks for your reply. I understand what you mean by the small pop sound from true bypass pedals, this however is very loud. I tried to look into it - I placed two resistors across the input to ground lugs on both the jacks, incase of a build up of DC in the circuit from a capacitor... that’s my basic understanding of it... however it hasn’t changed anything.

I tried running the pedal through my interface rather than my amplifier to see that changed anything, unfortunately still getting the same very loud pop.

Cheers,

Al

Did you reflow all of the solder joints in the pedal or just the ones on the toggle switch? I heartily endorse this procedure, which has an amazing way of fixing problems where the cause is not obvious: viewtopic.php?f=9&t=52188 And if it doesn't help, you've only wasted a few minutes of your time.

I reflowed quite a few of them, all that noticeably were not filling the whole eyelet. I think I'll detach the ancillary parts from the board and reflow everything again. Fingers crossed. Thanks for your help!

I mean "all the solder joints in the pedal" quite literally, including every wire connection at both ends. Good luck w/ it....

It works! I’ll now always appreciate the importance of a nice tidy solder joint.

Thanks ever so much. Legend!
